The Premier Release of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Premier Place.

Initially, Lux may look more like a challenging scholarly challenge than the latest popular music album from an artist whose previous single was a collaboration with a global K-pop icon. Divided into four different parts and voiced in 13 languages, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged work investigating female mystery, religious transcendence, and bodily change, often by way of the prism of various saintly figures. The end of a love affair—a topic treated with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—is shot upwards here, buoyed by the lush sound of a full orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a long list of contributors. Its sheer ambition alone renders the efforts of other pop stars appear rather small.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

That this album manages to avoid overly academic chin-stroking is almost miraculous, with sole credit belonging to the artist. Although it's not her first project to fuse the past with modern styles, its ambitions feel much higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk far more precarious. What truly raises this fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, dense compositions, and engrained theatricality, proves to be a core sense of joy. Similar to the iconic artist at her height, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's singing that pulls the listener up in its tornado. When she is breaking hearts in two, the listener nevertheless desire to stay right there through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

This exuberant energy comes forth clearly during the stunning Italian song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy over more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything falls away, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle followed by a comment prior to a hilariously over-the-top string surge crashes down with cartoonish force. The track immediately segues to the frenetic track driven by galloping strings, an imposing choral group, and a surprise role from the artist herself.

"The magic with Lux lies in you rarely exactly know—nor wish to predict—where it will go to next."

Almost each track concludes at a completely different place from where it started. A track examines the fleeting nature of fame over a delicate symphony only to collapsing into digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused work starts out dark and sinister, featuring prowling vocals, until sudden traditional handclaps and a heavenly choir enter to smooth the song's rough corners.

The Balance Between Experiment and Pop

A key achievement on the album is straddling the line of bold experimentation and broad accessibility. It is little surprise that it has achieved her highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of major charts: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy hits. A song sung entirely in English swells around a refrain that seems to collect more and more nagging melodies as it spirals skyward. This feat is echoed by another powerful track that expands and constricts, weaving layered melodies as a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song charms via its jaunty, theatrical flair and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the pop culture impact of other heartbreak anthems, lambasting an ex- partner described as an "psychological bully".
  • Across the album, the singing have a sharp edge, akin to a storybook character concealing a knife: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for capital-A artistry amid of looming artificial sameness. It rejects self-absorption for glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its own built-in ridiculousness. This is an abundant well of buried treasure that takes patience to fully explore but never feels like hard work. Where some major releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, Lux is a sumptuous banquet at which the characters at it, perhaps intoxicated on holy drink, flit between discussions about ancient saints, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about useless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's most endlessly creative practitioner.
